Wheelhouse, the specialist company in coaching, training and facilitation for
responsible business, has continued its research into the central role of values in
sustainable organisations. In collaboration with Debbie Ancell of British Airways,
Wheelhouse has released a paper which concludes that corporate sustainability is
underpinned by aligning the values of an organisation with those personal values of
the individuals within it.

The research paper goes beyond the traditional concept of a sustainable company
which focuses primarily on financial performance. Rather, it focuses on the
underlying necessity of embedding core values of sustainability into corporate DNA.
Whereas traditionally, business has approached sustainability as providing a
solution, the paper suggests a more direct approach of making sustainability a core
value of an organisation and thus directly targeting employee behaviour, business
strategy, planned successions, and training development.

Core values are statements of what a company is, and are derived from its culture,
which is in turn determined by the behaviour of its employees. Essentially, core
values can be seen as an accumulation of employee motivations. Therefore, a
successful company will ensure that its employees share a common set of values and
noticeably reflect them in the company's behaviour. Whereas different stakeholders
will take different messages from an organisation's core values, all employees must
understand them, be able to deliver them, and above all hold them as their own
personal values.

However, core values can only be successful indicators of an organisation if the
company is seen to live up to those values. History is littered with examples of
corporations with espoused core values which have failed to convince the consumer of
their commitment, and consequently lost their trust. With no external stability in
the commercial environment, businesses, as vulnerable enterprises, need a set of
strong core values that give them the resources and capacity to adapt to changing
political, social, economic and environmental changes.
